– Red Riding Hood Reversed –

Once upon a time, far away in the forest that hides between Glimmerbrook and Windenburg there was a little family of two, soon about to grow into three.

Pepper was sniffing a particularly interesting bush when he heard his mate come rushing through the tall grass, “Pepper… Pepper! – I’ve got fantastic news to tell you…”

02-12-21_2-44-02 PM

“Oh… well, what are you waiting for? Tell me before my tail falls off from excitement!” Pepper already had a good idea about what the news might be, nevertheless, he wanted to hear Ginger tell it to him. She was so excited and denying her the joy of giving him this very important news would be cruel.

“I’m pregnant – I’m finally pregnant! We’re going to be parents!” Ginger’s voice carried her feelings so well and they found their way to Pepper’s heart so readily. The joy and excitement was contagious, and he soon found himself smiling from ear to ear…

02-12-21_2-49-02 PM02-12-21_2-50-11 PM

“I’ve never been happier in my entire life!” he proclaimed as he pulled his mate in for a warm and gentle hug – he was a little afraid that he might squeeze her stomach, containing their precious offspring, too hard.

“We should celebrate with a feast” he said and before Ginger got to tell him that she really didn’t have much of an appetite right at this moment he had run off to catch them dinner.

Pepper heard strange noises nearby – like a youngling of sorts might be hurt, and so he went to investigate.

It was Sim-child. She was singing the song of her people – or at least one of them… Pepper had heard that Sims also had many different songs. However, to him they all sounded more or less the same.

02-12-21_2-58-52 PM

No matter how delicious and juicy a Sim might be, Pepper decided against catching this one. It would most certainly cause trouble with Sims disturbing the peace and quiet of the forest if one of their younglings went missing.

After many hours of searching for food, Pepper had to give up. He dreaded having to tell Ginger that they would go to bed hungry that night. The Sim-child had chased all the suitable prey away with her noisy behaviour and she had even picked all the bushes clean so there weren’t even berries to bring home.

Ginger was quick to forgive Pepper. She really wasn’t that hungry, but would like to go swimming and relaxing by the lake. Pepper thought it was a marvellous idea and so they went…

To their surprise, the lake had been fenced in and there was a sign telling them they weren’t welcome anymore.

Ginger got very anxious.
“This is our only source for clean water – how will we get something to drink if we can’t visit the lake anymore?” she asked Pepper with worry and sadness in her voice.

02-12-21_3-03-56 PM02-12-21_3-09-16 PM

Before Pepper could produce a reassuring answer, they heard a door open at the nearby cabin. An elderly lady stepped outside.

“Quick Ginger – Run and hide!”
Pepper and Ginger ran as fast as they could and got away before the lady noticed them.

Back at their little home, Ginger broke down in tears. With their prey getting disturbed by the increased Sim-presence and their source of water cut off, she was aware of the impending doom hovering over their little family.

02-12-21_3-16-03 PM

“What are we going to do, Pepper?” she cried.

Pepper who couldn’t bear to see his mate in tears promised to go investigate. Maybe he could find a solution.

He went to knock on the door of the cabin where the old lady and the little girl lived.

They both stepped outside to see who might have come to visit.
The little girl was frightened of the big wolf on their doorstep and the old lady was angry and told Pepper to shoo and never to come back. She didn’t want nasty fleabag wolves running around on her property!

02-12-21_3-25-51 PM

Pepper tried his best to negotiate peace, but the old lady and the girl wanted none of it and continued to insult him over and over again.

“Enough is enough!” Pepper thought to himself as he bared his teeth in a fierce growl.

02-12-21_3-29-12 PM02-12-21_3-52-02 PM

Before he knew it and without really wanting to, Pepper attacked the little girl and she fell lifeless to the ground. The old lady figured she would be next and ran to safety inside her little cabin.

02-12-21_3-53-36 PM

Pepper was quick to follow – There was no way this old hag was getting away with her nasty behaviour and crimes against the natural balance of things.

She was a feisty one and started hitting Pepper as soon as she noticed he had followed her inside.

02-12-21_4-00-54 PM02-12-21_4-03-28 PM

Pepper saw no other way than to fight back, and soon he had overpowered her. Since nature dictates that no natural resource is to be wasted, Pepper made a meal out of her.

02-12-21_4-07-58 PM

A few weeks later Ginger gave birth to a healthy little puppy and if anyone ever came to their neck of the woods, they would see a happy and harmonious family – ready to live happily ever after!

– Expectations –

Anna and Freddy met at one of those colourful and cheery festivals some years ago.
They were there for very different reasons but found themselves sat at the same table enjoying a late lunch.

They connected over their shared love for vibrant colours and spicy food.

01-14-21_7-09-53 PM

It wasn’t long before they would call each other their very best friend – and soon that friendship developed into love and a shared home.

Another thing that made the two of them feel connected was their ability to dream and use their imagination.

01-14-21_7-12-35 PM

Anna used her imagination to write SimLit. This didn’t make her a lot of simoleons, but Anna never found that to be very important. The ability to work from home and only when inspiration came wafting in through an open window or shone its reflections in the pond held much more value to Anna than any paycheque ever would.

Freddy used his imagination to dreams of things he would like to have. Fame – even by proxy, shiny new bling, a mansion in Del Sol Valley, a cowplant, a collection of rare gems – the list went on and on. I bet if you asked Freddy, he could keep listing things he’d like to have for days on end.

“So, how is it coming along?” Freddy stood in the doorway, looking at Anna as she typed away on her laptop. Tension and impatience hovering around him like an ominous cloud.

01-14-21_4-56-19 PM

Anna was struggling to hold a brilliant play on words that were swirling around in her mind, but looked up as she answered, “what do you mean, Fred?”

“I’ve been patient with you for years now and we still don’t have any of the stuff I want – not even a simple cowplant!” Freddy was talking himself into a fit of rage. “So, I guess what I’m asking is… WHERE IS MY BLOODY CAR? WHERE IS MY THOROUGHBRED HORSE? WHERE. IS. MY. STUFF?

01-14-21_4-59-30 PM

Anna was confused and shocked…
“What are you talking about? Why is this something I have to fix? What’s up with you and this foul attitude?”

Freddy’s anger only grew as Anna asked her questions.
“You told me you could do stuff like that… So I don’t understand why after being together for years now, you have never just given me some of the stuff I dream off – as a kind gesture, you know. To show me you love me…”

The confusion Anna had felt just before was replaced by a curious understanding.
“Ah, uhmn… I don’t know how to tell you this, Fred…” Anna tried to let Fred down gently – she didn’t want to further fuel his anger. “When I told you I make things come to life with my imagination and written words, I didn’t mean it like that… I can’t conjure up a functional car with just my imagination and a few written words.” Anna wasn’t sure how to tell Fred that functional cars weren’t even within the coding that made up their universe – he seemed so clueless. Had he always been like this… had she been too busy with her imaginary world to notice this side of Freddy all along?

“Fred… you do know that we don’t even have access to functional cars and horses, right?”  Again, Anna tried her best to not upset Fred any further.

Something inside Freddy seemed to break as Anna’s words sunk in…
“Can’t we get CC or mods, maybe… I just really wanted a functional car…” For a brief moment, Freddy seemed defeated – sad even.

“That’s not really up to me, Fred…”

“Well… what can you do then?! NOTHING! IT SEEMS! We’re done – Over! I’m leaving!”

yelling_collage

Freddy storming out of the house in anger was the last Anna ever saw of him and she eventually ended up counting herself lucky for it.

01-14-21_5-45-55 PM

“Well, good riddance! What do you say, Atwood – I guess it’s time for a new beginning.”

01-14-21_5-44-57 PM

Later that same day…

“Hey, do you mind if I set here? You look like I can’t ruin your mood any further with my miserable company.”

Anna looked up from her coffee and tried to produce a smile. “Misery loves company, so be my guest…” she said as she nodded towards the chair in front of her. “So, who rained on your parade? if you don’t mind me asking…”

01-14-21_6-03-46 PM

The guy sat down and smiled through sad eyes. “I work for a gaming company – sometimes Sims just demand the impossible of us and get angry when we can’t deliver… it’s so frustrating and disheartening, you know…”

01-14-21_6-04-09 PM

Anna knew exactly how the guy was feeling and they connected over their shared frustrations and their love for creating fabulous, though not perfect, worlds.

MSSSC: Feeding Strife

– Monthly SimLit Short Story Challenge –

Vet Participant nov dec 2020

This is my [first ever] entry to the Monthly SimLit Short Story Challenge. You can find the rules here: Monthly SimLit Short Story Challenge: November/December 2020 Theme

I’d like to you all to visit the link above.
Reason number one being I’d love if just one of you got inspired to try taking on the challenge. – Feeding Strife –

You all know me – and I am delighted that it is so.
I live among you, bouncing freely from one to another, feeding off your emotions, beliefs, traditions, disagreements, arguments – your stress and your doubts.

I do not just leech off of you – my hosts.
In return for you giving me life and letting me grow ever stronger, I bring fuel for your bonfires of envy and misunderstandings.

I am Strife!

You might wonder why you feel me so strongly this time of year. Is it because of the darkness and cold of winter? Is it because Sims are being cooped up inside with no way of letting off steam? Is it just coincidence playing its games?

I can assure you that it is none of the above – though it is related to it being winter – in some parts of our world at least.

While you are all looking forward to your pork roasts and ginger cookies – the abundant feast of Simsmas. I’m looking forward to my very own feast – one that I will enjoy and live off for a long time.

I am lurking, waiting to pounce in everything you say, and everything action you take.
Though, my greatest trick of all might be that I thrive just as well in all the words left unsaid and all the things left undone. I rarely truly show myself – You have all grown to believe that you can hide me away, subdue and cage me. Reality is, however, that I only grow stronger from never being let out.

12-31-20_2-51-29 PM

I hover around your sister, who once again got a little too tipsy and a little too close with your husband – I wait for you to feel that sting and hurt inside – and then I strike. I whisper yellow and green poison in your ear and I linger – making sure you do not forget.

12-31-20_2-54-21 PM

12-31-20_3-04-30 PM

I am in the self-absorbed and snide remarks about fitness and workout tips given to you by your cousin as you try to enjoy the festive and delicious food on your plate. I am in the false and stiff smile you send his way – I love to bounce like this – like a ping-pong ball getting bigger and bigger.

When your Uncle brings out the sugar cookies instead of the ginger cookies that have always been a tradition in your family, I am that little annoyance you feel. The one that will grow stronger with every bite you take. You just wanted those damn ginger cookies! Why couldn’t he just stick to tradition? Why does he always have to be like this? Do you feel me pouring that fuel yet?

12-31-20_3-10-50 PM

You might think that you hide your feelings too well for me to find them, but you would be wrong.
I live inside you just as much as I live among you. The neatly wrapped feelings of anger and resentment that you so carefully hide away in the darkest corners of your being are like glorious Simsmas presents waiting for me and my attention alone. I like to unwrap them slowly at night when you’re trying to go to sleep. I prefer a seething hot cup of spite to go along with the unwrapping.

My desert is the most delicious of all. It’s the children – well, not the actual children themselves – I am no monster!

12-31-20_3-25-00 PM

Children wear no masks. They have not yet been taught how or why to hide away their feelings. My joy reaches heights unheard of with every knitted sweater they unwrap – their disappointment sprinkle over me like diamonds raining from the sky. The envy they feel over presents that were not for them is marvellous. It almost feels sinful.

As the day comes to an end and you round up your families to go home, I make sure to tuck a piece of myself away with every one of you – and as you put on your smiles and say your goodbyes and Merry Simsmas; I think to myself that this is indeed the best time of year – Merry Simsmas to you all!

January 2021: I’m lost for words and that’s usually not a good thing if you call yourself a SimLit writer. It’s an absolute honour to be one of the three writers to get the Reader’s Choice Award when all the stories for Nov/Dec were so touching and well-written. Thank you all for the inspiration and congrats to all 💕
